What is a vassal state?

A vassal state is a country or territory that is under the control or protection of a more powerful state. A vassal state typically owes loyalty and tribute to its dominant ruler or country, and may have limited autonomy or decision-making power. Vassal states were common throughout history, particularly in feudal societies where lords would control and protect smaller territories. In more modern times, some countries have become partially or fully vassal states as a result of colonization or political alliances. Vassal states may also exist as puppet governments installed by a more powerful country for their own strategic interests.
